Our Services
Detached youth work is at the core of our work, helping us reach out and engage sometimes challenging and marginalized young people. We have youth workers out on the streets in Consett and the surrounding areas 5 nights a week. Youth workers meet young people where they are at in parks and streets and develop meaningful and trusting relationships. This is often the starting point for young people accessing our other services.
Workshops
Workshops
Derwentside Detached Youth Project is a needs led organisation and the activities and services we provide are varied. With the help of funders we are able to provide the young people of Consett with opportunities to take part in activities which they might not otherwise be able to. The young people often help to raise their own funds through organised activities such as packing bags in supermarkets found in the local area, such as ASDA Stanley.
Alcohol Awareness Workshops
We provide Alcohol Awareness Workshops to small groups of young people. The workshops provide young people with the knowledge to reduce harm and raise awareness. Some content is factual, delivered in a fun way, and there is group discussion and role play. During these sessions young people are able to draw on their experiences as well as explore issues within a safe environment. These workshops have been successful and all those taking part have said they learned something. Some say that their alcohol intake has reduced as a result.
Sexual Health & Wellbeing
Our detached youth workers offer friendly one to one confidential help, advice and guidance to the Young People in our area. As part of this work they offer the young people the opportunity of the C Card which gives the young people access to free condom provision, along with sexual health information and guidance. Chlamydia Screening also made available. All services are offered on a strictly confidential basis
Volunteering
In addition to our workshops and activities, the DDYP also supports and encourages young people to volunteer within the project and at various events throughout the year. Volunteering offers young people a valuable experience, building confidence, employment skills and promotes community action
To all the boys and girls, for a wonderful day and a beautiful dinner, we all had a great day”
